Predictive Mating Analysis

Quarternicks reads your horse, then predicts the cross.

Quarternicks is a predictive mating analysis for Quarter Horse and Paint breeders. It quantifies the architecture of your horse’s pedigree: the depth of proven Key Ancestors behind it, the orientation of the linebreeding that carries them, and the quality of the conduits those crosses run through, then evaluates conformation and models the pedigree of the proposed cross to project what it should produce.

Weigh more than one stallion and it compares the matings directly, identifies the stronger cross for your intended goal, and projects whether a colt or a filly from that cross is the better prospect. It nicks your individual horse.

The framework is empirical. We measured structure and Key Ancestor saturation across 200,000 pedigrees and ran a battery of statistical analyses on the 800 all-time top earners in 16 AQHA disciplines. The structural signatures that distinguish elite performers, and that differ measurably by discipline, are what Quarternicks scores: Key Ancestor saturation, linebreeding orientation, conduit quality, and conformation, each normalized to your horse’s own discipline.

Key Ancestor saturation

A measure of how densely the pedigree is populated with proven Key Ancestors. Saturation distinguishes deep, established pedigrees from the shallow majority, and the level that qualifies as deep is calibrated per discipline.

A traditional report tells you what earned money before. Quarternicks tells you why a cross will work next.

Know the difference

The limitations of traditional nicking reports

Most "nicking reports" in the industry rely on the earnings of past crosses, listing which broodmare-sire lines have produced money-earners with a given stallion. That can highlight a historical pattern, but it never tells you why a cross worked, or whether it fits your specific mare. Earnings-based nicking overlooks five critical things.

01

It doesn't adjust for population size

Stallions that bred large books of mares naturally sire more winners, simply because they had more opportunities. A large number of earners can just mean a larger book of mares, not necessarily better crosses. Opportunity, access, and money send a prospect down the road to earn.

02

It doesn't evaluate pedigree structure

Simply listing a broodmare sire doesn't show how influential ancestors are placed within the pedigree, or how those influences interact and reinforce one another across generations.

03

It doesn't consider structural compatibility

Two horses can share successful ancestors and still reinforce different traits depending on the patterns in the pedigree. Earnings say nothing about whether a mating is structurally sound, complementary, or whether it will produce traits you aren't expecting.

04

It doesn't account for trait transmission

Performance traits like speed, cow sense, durability, and trainability come from complex pedigree patterns that earnings alone can't measure, so an earnings list can't predict what a cross will actually pass on.

05

It can't tell you whether a colt or a filly is the better prospect

A traditional nicking report can't tell you whether a colt or a filly will be the best prospect from the cross. That matters more than ever with sexed semen, ICSI, and embryo transfer: tools that let mare owners make the right cross the first time, spend their dollars where it counts, and get the prospect that actually brings the ROI.

Because of these gaps, traditional nicking is descriptive: it tells you what happened. Quarternicks is predictive. It tells you what will.

Breeding sheer volume is what you rely on when you can’t trust your own decisions.

Beyond surface statistics

Quarternicks uses traditional breeding data, it just doesn’t stop there. Here’s what “deeper” actually means.

Tap each point to reveal a layer

of 07

We use the traditional data, we just don’t stop there

Historical performance records, production statistics, broodmare-sire patterns, and discipline-specific earnings all tell you what certain bloodlines have already accomplished. That’s real context. But it doesn’t explain the biological reason a mating works, or whether the same result is likely to happen again.

We read the architecture of the pedigree, not just the names

Quarternicks examines how influential ancestors are distributed across the mating, how often they repeat, and whether those repetitions happen through meaningful structural patterns: inbreeding and linebreeding structures, where influential ancestors sit across multiple generations, the balance between sire and dam lines, and how much the maternal families contribute to the pedigree’s overall strength.

The patterns that matter usually hide generations back

Potent pedigree patterns often appear several generations deep, through multiple independent pathways. Finding them means tracking how influential ancestors repeat through sons, daughters, and maternal families; deciding whether those repetitions are purposeful linebreeding or accidental duplication; and judging whether they actually concentrate the traits that made those ancestors great, enough to build critical mass around a trait package, not just scattered influence.

The path an ancestor takes changes what it does

An ancestor repeating through daughters can reinforce maternal traits very differently than the same ancestor coming through sons. Colt and filly factors affect how patterns transmit, because reinforcement through male or female pathways can change how traits express in the next generation. And relationships between full, half, three-quarter, and seven-eighths siblings further change how these patterns interact.

These patterns don’t jump off the page

They take careful analysis across generations to identify, and even more experience to interpret. Even once you find them, the real challenge is knowing what they mean: some inbreeding and linebreeding structures reinforce useful traits and create consistency in the athlete produced, while others just concentrate weaknesses, or build a pedigree that looks impressive on paper but doesn’t reproduce reliably.

The pedigree has to work in the body, too

Breeding decisions have to make sense physically as well as genetically. Two horses can both have successful pedigrees and still be a poor mating if their conformational tendencies reinforce the same structural weaknesses or fail to complement each other biomechanically. A pedigree explains part of the horse; the body still has to be able to carry that genetic potential.

The real question isn’t what worked. It’s why, and whether it’ll happen again

By combining historical performance with pedigree-architecture analysis, conformational evaluation, and discipline-specific interpretation, Quarternicks answers a bigger question than a traditional nicking report. Not just what crosses have worked before, but why they worked, and whether there’s a legitimate biological reason to expect the same result again.

That’s the difference between a report that describes the past and one that predicts the future.

What breeders say

Breeders don’t go back to guessing.

★★★★★
I ordered a Hall of Fame and pedigree analysis from Quarternicks, and Heidi truly outdid herself, as always. This report was so complete and so thorough. It’s not just a basic pedigree breakdown; it’s on another level entirely. For those of us who don’t have endless resources to keep breeding and hoping we get it right, this kind of analysis is a game changer. It takes the guesswork out of the equation and replaces it with solid data, giving you the confidence to make informed, strategic decisions. If you’re serious about breeding smarter, this isn’t just absolutely worth it; your actual success depends on it!!

I highly recommend Heidi Schlenker’s work! She put together a comprehensive HiCaliber Cat HOF Analysis Report on my stallion that has provided both me, and those who choose to breed to him, with valuable, data-driven insight. The report helps confirm the intentions behind specific “nicks” in his pedigree and gives breeders greater confidence in their decisions. Heidi is truly an expert in ancestry research, breeding strategy, and horse marketing. Her reports, advice, and overall work are top notch.

The analysis that I received was very thorough and confirmed what I had thought I would get from the breeding on my colt. It is surprisingly accurate based on his abilities he demonstrates daily. I would have to say the trait analysis is spot on with his speed, and cow sense. I would highly recommend anyone wanting to see what their potential breeding might yield have an analysis done to see if you will get the desired traits you are after.

This is a priceless service and Heidi is extremely punctual with great communication! Like many others, I was always under the false belief that the horse in front of you only inherited traits from the past 3 generations. Heidi has developed and patented an incredible program that not only calculates traits passed forward for 20 generations, but breaks down the top 5 traits and percentages, and each horse is unique. We were so excited to see our stallions results and now are having all of the broodmare evals done to pair the best 2026 season. Anyone wanting to truly breed with purpose and have the best matches should definitely have an HOF analysis from Heidi! We are ecstatic about what we learned!

Who’s behind it

I built this for the breeder with big dreams that needs a great ROI.

I’ve shown, bred, and studied performance horses my whole life, since I was four years old. Along the way I trained under the late Susan Larkin, the pedigree analyst who helped build AQHA’s pedigree library, and I’ve spent years turning what she taught me into a system any breeder can use.

Quarternicks is that system. It reads pedigree architecture, conformation, and trait transmission so you can breed on a decision instead of a hope. It doesn’t replace your intuition. It gives it better information.
